Ecorse Library – December 1, 1948
Ecorse Advertiser
Ecorse Library One of Finest in U.S.A.
As this publication goes to press on or about December 1, 1948, the Ecorse Public Library will move into one of the most beautiful and best equipped small libraries in the United States. It occupies a splendid and convenient site on West Jefferson Avenue at Outer Driver.
The main floor has separate adult and juvenile sections, work room, and librarian’s office. Features are overstuffed furniture, fluorescent lighting, floor lamps and magazine racks.
The basement includes an auditorium, with stage for children’s programs equipped with motion picture projector, a kitchen, and other features.
The Ecorse branch of the Wayne County Library was opened in 1922, occupying a few shelves in Loveland’s pharmacy.
March 22, 1926, the first public library was opened in the DeWallot building with 600 volumes and Mrs. Ada Saunders as librarian. She is still in charge, assisted by Goldie Kupovits, Carrie Dilfill, Wanda Payne and Alvin Rogers.
Space does not permit telling of the many services performed by the library during the years. Mrs Saunders expressed deep gratitude to Mayor Voisine and the City Council for their great interest and splendid backing, the latest evidence of which is the new library building.
Circulation for Ecorse and the Visger bBranch for the year 1947 was 89,326 with approximately 17,370 volumes.
