Ecorse and Downriver Slide Show
On Thursday June 11 I came to the Ecorse Senior Center from my home in Grand Rapids to talk about Ecorse History and my latest book about Ecorse called Ecorse Along the Detroit River which is available on Amazon if you want to buy it and also at Barnes and Noble and on the Arcadia Press website. I hope you buy it because it has pictures of the Ecorse that used to be and can be once again. I assure the cynics among you that I have not gotten rich from writing histories of Ecorse or never will!!!!
Going to Ecorse is a bittersweet experience for me. Each time I visit, I am deeply saddened at what has happened to the progressive, growing city of my youth. But even worse than economic deterioration is the slipping away of its history. As the generations who remember a different Ecorse pass away to a better place, their Ecorse disappears, too many tines without a trace. We need to try to preserve Ecorse history from its beginnings to the present. History is not just for senior citizens or people with a passion for it. History affects all of us and all of us make history every day.
Ecorse is the only Downriver community without a historical society. In past efforts to obtain a building and try to start a historical society, I have resorted to begging for a building and pleading to deaf ears. I am not a city official, or a celebrity, just someone who cares about Ecorse History. It's up to former and present Ecorse citizens to prevent other communities from receiving our history piecemeal. They certainly won't honor or appreciate it like Ecores residents do or should.
Let's prevent this from happening. I am working on a virtual Ecorse Historical Society and Museum for this site until we have a historical society of our own for exhibits and events. You can help by contributing pictures, memories, and material, caring and time if you can.
I felt discouraged at the Senior Center program because I left pencils and paper for people to write a short Ecorse memory and no one did.. I realize that former Ecorse residents are scattered all over the country and even the world, but it doesn't take hours to write two paragraphs about Ecorse. Please write down some Ecorse memories so we can preserve our Ecorse.
Enough of the sermon. It is heartfelt and I really crave your input as well as mine. I have posted my slide presentation and hope you enjoy it.
Sincerely,
Kathy Covert
